Last night was a bit scary for us. He was doing well but then suddenly late afternoon he started running a fever. Then a little bit of time later it was 103.5. He hasn't run 103+ fever since the beginning of the illness. He also said his head hurt and his vision was blurry. He had been crying though.
He was miserable.
He was hysterical for awhile because he has a hard case of white coat syndrome. His heart rate jumps to 180-200 when the nurse comes in. We stopped all IV drugs and he's taking them orally now which is a good and bad thing. He still gets extremely upset but he's not as distraught.
He has a really bad rash that itches like crazy and when he's super upset paired with fever it was bad. If you rub on his body it breaks out in hives or urticaria. Tom drew this in his arm and this is what happened 30 seconds later.
The on call doctor and his nurse last night were having to do his work up and were in there more because he was running a fever. He was crying and screaming and she would not leave him alone!
She looked at me and said "we need to give him a different antihistamine to help sedate him he doesn't seem to be responding to the Benadryl."
I looked at this woman and while I get she's trying to make him more comfortable she was making him nuts. I told her no and she needed to leave
She wasn't even out the door and I laid with him and he was calming down immediately.
He slept really well last night as well.
This morning he woke saying his head hurt but once we started wishing him happy birthday he perked right up.
We let him open his gift from his Aunt Bruce and Uncle Thom. He was thrilled and so excited.
We ate breakfast then I took Sam home so I could shower and wash diapers Sam needs to crawl around he's really bored at the hospital.
I've been cloth diapering in the hospital but after today I went and bought some disposable ones one less thing to handle. I miss Sam's poofy butt. Also he smells like pee :/
Anyway while I was gone they took Lucas' temperature and it was 100.3. So I am running around the house so I can get back thinking it's going to be a repeat of last night.
I wrap his presents from us and throw them in the car and head back up to the hospital.
He's perky and fine. About 20 minutes later his cardiologist shows up to do an echo cardiogram. I've never seen a doctor do any sort of test. It was awesome.
Lucas is nervousness but he really likes the doctor. He chatted through the exam.
His coronary arteries are enlarged still not a whole lot of change. So we may have to do another round of IVIG which means another three days in the hospital.
He sent an allergist in because he thinks Lucas' skin rash is an allergic reaction to either the IVIG or the augmentin he had.
The allergist said until we test for sure to keep him off all penicillin.
Birthday festivities have been simple. He opened our gifts and Tom and him out some of his Legos together.
One of his pediatricians came in to wish him happy birthday. He chatted with us for about half an hour.
Then the night nurse came in wish a present for him. He was so excited he hugged her. When he opened it it was full of matchbox cars.
He was much better today than yesterday the swelling has almost gone away completely his face isn't all poofy.
He ate almost half of his dinner, two pop tarts, a small piece of cake, and is now eating some chips. This could come back to haunt us but if he's hungry I'm down. The aspirin irritates his stomach.
While I absolutely hate he spent his 5th birthday in the hospital all things considering he had a good day.
I was going to write this sweet birthday post but haven't gotten the chance. Maybe next week.
